Pride is defined by Dictionary.com as confidence and self-respect as expressed by members of a group, typically one that has been socially marginalized, on the basis of their shared identity, culture, and experience.
Pride to me is a sense of freedom and expression, much like our constitutional right and first amendment: Freedom of Speech. It took me some time to understand the power of pride, being that I “came out” at the age of 16. However, after experiencing my first Pride Parade that same year, it really hit home. These people, my people, celebrating all day and night about Love. Pride is love and love is pride. Think about it. We love this nation and take pride in it, right? Our Patriotism is Pride.
The month of June was chosen for Pride to commemorate the Stonewall Riots that happened in 1969. These riots fought for equal rights for the LGBT community. Equality for marriage was finally won on June 26, 2015. I remember waking up that morning, getting ready for work, putting on my tie when it came on the news. Now, my partner and I are engaged and are looking forward to creating a beautiful life together.
With all this being said, I am so happy this month recognizes Pride. I’m proud and prideful to have a career with the TMX Finance Family of Companies.
Love is Love,
Michael Burger
