What Does Black History Mean to Me Series

What Does Black History Mean to Me Series

Black History Month is an annual event honoring the many vital contributions of Black Americans, something the TMX Finance® Family of Companies is proud to celebrate. What started as “Negro History Week” in 1926, observed on the second week in February to honor Abraham Lincoln’s and Frederick Douglass’ birthdays, has turned into a month-long devotion to celebrating Black Americans. As part of our annual Company-wide celebration, we ask employees, “What does Black History Mean to you?” General Manager Kendall Wheeler, sums it up, “It’s a celebration of all that we have overcome and all that we are working toward.” Throughout …

My Native American Roots

My Native American Roots

Growing up, I was raised to be proud of my Native American roots and Comanche runs deep on my mother’s side of the family. In 1977, I had the opportunity to meet my great-grandmother who spoke mainly her native language with a little Spanish; she was 104 at that time. With the help of my grandfather, he was able to translate the fascinating stories of her childhood and how she lived. It was like stepping back in time and being educated without the history books. This is a memory I will always treasure.  A few years ago, through modern technology, …

When Hollywood Learned to Speak Different Languages

When Hollywood Learned to Speak Different Languages

Enrique Gonzalez serves as an expert movie critic and writes a weekly column for a local Hispanic news publication in Phoenix, AZ. In addition to his role as a General Manager at TMX Finance® Family of Companies, he has been a local radio and television personality, movie promoter, and most recently, a podcast host. At the beginning of the industrial film era most productions did not have audio. In 1920, the silent cinema was a universal cinema, so the nationality of the actors did not matter nor their voices. Really, the quality Hollywood was seeking were faces that looked good …

Beyond Proud

Beyond Proud

I learned early on, from growing up Hispanic, that family is the most important part of our culture.  Life brings many uncertainties and in a world of constant change, family is the one constant I will always have. Both my parents were born in Mexico and have passed down many elements of our culture and heritage but placed the most importance on family.  I am from a small border town in Sonora/Arizona called Nogales.  I lived on the Mexican side of the border up until I graduated from middle school and then moved to the American side to finish high …

Diversity in thought, background, and culture has always been one of the driving forces behind our success at the TMX Finance® Family of Companies. That’s why we’re proud to honor the unique contributions and individual achievements of our Hispanic and Latinx Team Members during Hispanic Heritage Month. Johnson declared National Hispanic Heritage Week in 1968 and it was later expanded into a 30-day period by Ronald Reagan in 1988. With Hispanic and Latinx …

Hispanic Impact: More than Just Your Average Hard Workers

Hispanic Impact: More than Just Your Average Hard Workers

Hi, my name is Ana Escamilla Pereyra.  I was born in Veracruz, Mexico, and was brought to the U.S. when I was only 45 days old. My mother migrated from Northern Mexico and my father migrated from Southern Mexico and then met in Gainesville, GA in 1987.  Like most immigrants, they came to the United States to provide a better lifestyle for their families. Gainesville, known as the Poultry Capital of the World, provided a huge opportunity for them to start their mission here. My dad had a vision and understood that to get somewhere, you needed both skills and …

A Celebration of Culture by Argelia Hernandez

My name is Argelia Hernandez and I am Mexican American. This year, for Hispanic Heritage Month, I am going to begin celebrating by sharing a part of my culture, which is an immense part of me. Leaders Making History: Nicolas Rodriguez, Regional Vice President

Nicolas Rodriguez always imagined he would grow up to help others. Although his father’s goal was to have him take on the family strawberry farm, Rodriguez wanted to hold his own career in business and leadership. He was able to do just that. When Rodriguez joined the Company over five years ago, he assisted in opening new stores in our fast-growing California market. “I found TitleMax through LinkedIn and applied while I was still working in Mexico. Things didn’t work out because I wanted to be in California. When I came back to the states, I reconnected with the recruiter, …
